Julie + Sean results in a wonderful night in DC!

Our first ever request for an evening e-session at the Lincoln Memorial. Julie and Sean are planning for an afternoon wedding, but Julie was set on some night shot photos so she opted to do her engagement session in the evening hours at the Lincoln Memorial and Sean gracefully obliged. We certainly had a blast with them both as we strolled around seeking photo opportunities on what had to have been one of the most pleasant evenings in DC this year!

Thank you both so much for giving us the honor of being chosen to photograph your wedding this upcoming October! We will be seeing you two very soon!

One of the things we wish more people understood about Indian weddings is this:

“Indian” is not one culture.

Nikitaa comes from a Kannada background. Durgesh comes from a Bihari background.

Two families.

Two regional histories.

Two sets of traditions and expectations.

And now, one marriage.

That is part of what makes photographing South Asian weddings endlessly fascinating to us.

A Hindu ceremony may contain rituals that look familiar from one wedding to the next, but the way they are performed, the order they happen in, the language used, the family involvement and even the meaning attached to certain moments can shift depending on region, community and family tradition.

So our job is never to walk into a wedding thinking, we’ve seen this before.

We pay attention.

To the priest.

To the parents.

To the hands reaching in.

To the subtle cues between families.

To the tiny rituals happening off to the side while everyone else is watching the obvious moment.

Because sometimes the most culturally significant photograph isn’t the widest image of the mandap.

It is a mother adjusting something.

A hand being placed into another.

A sacred thread being tied.

Feet touching.

Rice being offered.

A glance exchanged between two people who suddenly realize this ceremony is no longer theoretical.

They are married.

And with Nikitaa + Durgesh, what made this ceremony so beautiful wasn’t simply the color or the rituals.

It was watching two different family histories begin folding into one.

That is the part we never want to photograph casually.

Because years from now, these images won’t only show what their wedding looked like.

They will help their children understand where they came from.

And that may be one of the most important things photographs can do. 🤍

Some photographs look effortless because the work happened before the shutter was ever pressed.

That little curb moment with Nikitaa + Durgesh?

Very intentionally placed.

We were looking at the direction of the light, the background, how the colors in their clothing would sit against the environment, where we wanted their bodies positioned and how to create something that felt natural without leaving the outcome entirely to chance.

And here’s something couples rarely realize:

When you have a strong photography team leading a scene, your cinema team often gets to benefit from that experience too. 😉

Good light is good light.

Good composition is good composition.

And a beautifully constructed moment usually looks pretty fantastic in motion as well.

Make no mistake though—some of the best wedding cinema happens because photographers know when to lead, when to create, and just as importantly, when to get out of the way and let something real unfold.

That balance comes with experience.

But Nikitaa + Durgesh made all of this ridiculously easy.

By the time we photographed their engagement session, the “getting to know each other” part had disappeared completely. Showing up for their wedding felt less like arriving to photograph clients and more like catching up with old friends we happened to have cameras around.

And then came their first look.

The smiles. The nerves. The little glances. That wonderfully familiar feeling of two people realizing, okay… this is actually happening.

Those are the moments we never want to over-direct.

Because our favorite photographs usually live somewhere between what we intentionally create and what we patiently allow to happen.

One of the greatest blessings of doing this work for as long as we have is that so many couples don’t simply disappear after the gallery is delivered.

They become people we genuinely love.

Photographing the wedding is beautiful.

Getting to witness what comes after it might be even better. 🤍

Can we talk about something that probably deserves a MUCH higher spot on the wedding photography priority list?

The food.

Because at an Indian wedding, food is never just… food.

It is hospitality.

It is family.

It is culture.

It is the thing everyone will absolutely discuss afterward whether you planned for them to or not. 😂

And yet I sometimes wonder how many couples actually think, “Make sure someone photographs the food well.”

We do.

Because twenty years from now, the photographs that bring a wedding rushing back may not only be the ceremony or the first dance.

It might be seeing the chaat station again.

The mithai.

That one dish everyone went back for twice.

The plate your uncle assembled like he had been training for it his entire life.

Food has always been woven deeply into South Asian life, and after all these years of being part of an Indian family, I have learned that feeding someone is very often another way of saying I love you.

My mother-in-law is the perfect example.

She will arrive, take one look at us and be the FIRST person to lovingly acknowledge any weight we may have gained…

…and approximately thirty seconds later open the sweets she brought, put one directly into our mouths and insist we have another. 😂

No complaints from the non-Indian daughter-in-law over here.

It is simply one of those little things I have come to understand and love about living inside this culture: sometimes affection arrives wrapped in foil, soaked in syrup or handed to you before your suitcase has even made it upstairs.

And at weddings? That love gets multiplied by a few hundred people.

Which is why we photograph it.

The colors. The texture. The steam. The hands serving. The aunties inspecting. The guests gathering around it.

Because it is part of the story too.

And seriously… how ridiculously good does this look?!

Bollywood Bistro absolutely knocked this one out of the city. 👏🏽

A mother leaning in.

A hand resting on another hand.

Someone laughing just outside the frame.

The expression Nikitaa made while the games were being played.

The way Durgesh looked at her when nobody was asking him to.

These celebrations are incredibly beautiful—but beauty alone isn’t enough for us.

We want the photographs to help a family remember what being there felt like.

When Nikitaa + Durgesh first chose us, they told us they loved the vivid, timeless quality of our work and trusted us with their wedding.

Afterward, Nikitaa’s father Rajesh sent a message about receiving their first preview and called the photographs their “precious memories,” telling us he would be sharing them with family and friends back home.

That sentence stayed with me. Because that is the job.

Preserving pieces of a family so those memories can travel—to another home, another country and eventually another generation.

And this colorful, joyful night was only the beginning. ❤️

Some inquiries feel different before they ever become bookings.

When Suparna and her sister Shalini got on a call with me earlier this year, I already knew their family.

Years ago, during COVID, we photographed their cousin Samhita’s wedding. And when it came time for Suparna to get married, Shalini told me we were the first people who came to mind because they felt we would be the right fit for her.

I’m not sure they realized how much that meant to me.

Have you ever wanted something badly while also knowing it wasn’t guaranteed?

That was me when we hung up.

Because somewhere during that conversation with these two sisters, I had already started feeling less like the photographer they were considering and more like someone who belonged around their family. 😂

Thankfully, Suparna and Sumanth chose us.

A few weeks later, we were all meeting at the Jefferson Memorial at 7:00 in the morning—trying to beat DC crowds, chasing soft spring light and crossing our fingers for cherry blossoms.

Shalini came too, this time as sister/support crew/dog wrangler, because yes… Suparna and Sumanth brought the pups. ❤️

What I love most looking back at these photographs isn’t simply how beautiful that morning was. It’s knowing what came before them.

One cousin’s wedding during one of the strangest seasons our industry has ever experienced somehow became a relationship their family remembered years later.

That matters to us.

Because the greatest compliment isn’t someone telling us they love their photographs.

It’s hearing, “When it was our family’s turn again, we thought of you.”

And now this Sunday, it is finally Suparna + Sumanth’s turn.

From Samhita’s wedding, to that first call with two sisters, to an early morning at the Jefferson… and now wedding weekend.

We cannot wait to be back with this family. 🤍

Aditi and Connal had chosen Glenstone because Aditi wanted something quiet, natural and green. Admission? Free. Photography? Allowed.

What we somehow missed: reservation required.

We arrived first thing in the morning—quite literally some of the first people there—and learned that with busloads of visitors expected, there was absolutely no getting in without one.

So… what does a photography team do when Plan A disappears before the first photograph?

We pivot.

Instead of photographing inside Glenstone, we worked the areas surrounding it, followed the light, found the greenery Aditi had envisioned and created the session you’re looking at here.

And then Aditi said something afterward that stuck with us: the photographs weren’t even the most important part of the session to them. They wanted the opportunity to meet us, spend time together and become comfortable with how we work before their wedding day.

THAT is exactly why we love engagement sessions.

There was also someone pretty special hanging out with us that morning. Ramana of Villart Production House @villart_ramana —our trusted India partner, SONY Ambassador and, personally, someone I consider much more like a big brother than a colleague. When our couples have celebrations spanning both the U.S. and India, having a team that can work seamlessly across both countries matters tremendously.

We’ve photographed alongside Ramana in India—including one incredible wedding at the Hyderabad Convention Center—and whenever he is stateside, getting him together with our couples is always a treat.

And now the real fun begins.

This Saturday, Aditi + Connal get married at the Bethesda North Marriott, with Darshan and the ShubhMangal Events team leading the way.

From an unexpectedly improvised engagement morning to wedding weekend… we’re ready for you two. 🤍

This is the moment I live for at every reception — when the DJ ask EVERYONE to throw their hands up in the air, hundreds of hands go up at once. Shatakshi and Madhu`s reception crowd went ALL IN for this shot, and honestly? You can feel the joy in the room just looking at it. Grandparents, cousins, little kids on hips, the whole extended family together in one frame — this is what I mean when I say a wedding photo can hold a whole community. Right before the reception doors open and the music kicks in, there`s always this little pocket of quiet — just the two of them, before they become the center of the room again. Shatakshi and Madhu stole a few seconds exactly like this, and honestly, moments like these are some of our favorite parts of the whole day to photograph. No posing, no prompting, no one watching — and maybe a kiss on the cheek for his now WIFE!

We`ve been doing this long enough to know that these quiet seconds tell just as much of the story as the big reveal does. It`s why we always build time for them into the timeline, with the amazing planners we work with - no matter how packed the day gets.

Right before the reception doors open and the music kicks in, there's always this little pocket of quiet — just the two of them, before they become the center of the room again. Shatakshi and Madhu stole a few seconds exactly like this, and honestly, moments like these are some of our favorite parts of the whole day to photograph. No posing, no prompting, no one watching — and maybe a kiss on the cheek for his now WIFE!

Our niece Shelby is getting married this October, and being her Matron of Honor has given me another title I don’t get to carry very often on a wedding journey — Aunt Amy.

And this day filled my heart.

My Mom. My sister. My cousin Ellen. Shelby’s dear friend Maria, who at this point might as well share our DNA. 😂 My daughter Brittney, Alaissa, my cousin Kim and so many of the women who have been part of Shelby’s life coming together in our home to celebrate her.

Ellen and Maria especially — I truly could not have done this without you two.

Maybe it’s because we spend our lives photographing families, but days like this remind us why we’ve always cared so much about the people surrounding the pretty.

Decorations eventually come down.

Flowers fade.

The food disappears.

But someday these photographs become evidence of something much bigger:

Look who was there.

Look who loved you.

Look at the generations gathered in one place.

Look at the people who showed up for this chapter of your life.

We say all the time that photographs become more valuable as the years pass, and it’s a little different when suddenly they’re photographs of your own family.

Shelby, you are so incredibly loved.

And come October, I get to stand beside you while you become a wife.

But for one afternoon, we got to simply surround you with all the women who helped you become you.

That was the beautiful part. 🤍

Everyone showing up for one person we all love so very much.

We spend our lives preserving celebrations for other families, and every once in a while we get the reminder of just how important it is to preserve our own.

This part of the ceremony is exactly why photographing an Indian wedding well requires more than simply knowing where to stand.

You have to understand what is unfolding around you.

The gestures that happen quickly. The family members who step in at exactly the right moment. The exchanges that may look ordinary to someone unfamiliar with the ceremony, but carry meaning because of who is doing them and what they represent.

Shatakshi and Madhu’s wedding brought together her Bihari heritage and his Telugu heritage, and throughout the ceremony you could see those traditions meeting and becoming something uniquely theirs.

And visually? Come on.

The red. The florals. The movement of her dupatta. The expressions between them when the ceremony gave them a second to actually look at one another.

Indian weddings are wonderfully layered like that.

There is the ritual happening in front of you, the emotion underneath it, and usually a dozen little stories unfolding around the edges at the exact same time.

Our job is to understand enough to anticipate the ritual — and stay observant enough to catch everything that was never rehearsed.

Because years from now, we want these photographs to do more than remind Shatakshi and Madhu how beautiful everything looked.

We want them to remember how it felt, who was beside them, what their families carried into that space, and the fleeting moments that made this ceremony unmistakably theirs.

Pretty photographs are wonderful.

But photographs that preserve the story?

Those are the ones we’re always chasing. 🤍

From walking her down the aisle toward Madhu, to literally fanning both of them through what felt like almost the entire ceremony — with only a few handoff breaks in between — on one of the hottest days of the summer, in full sun, wearing a full sherwani.

That is love.

But back to our beautiful couple, because seriously… how gorgeous are these two?

Shatakshi is Bihari. Madhu is Telugu.

And while some people may not immediately think of that as a “fusion wedding,” it absolutely is in its own way.

India is not one culture, one set of traditions, one language or one way of doing things. The beauty of Indian weddings is often found in those regional differences — in the customs each family brings with them, in what gets preserved, what gets adapted, and what gets blended when two people from different backgrounds choose to build one life together.

That is what makes weddings like this so beautiful to photograph.

You are not just documenting a ceremony.

You are watching two families bring pieces of where they come from into one shared space.

And Shatakshi and Madhu did that beautifully. 🤍

I’m going to apologize in advance to anyone who feels like they’ve seen a lot of Shatakshi and Madhu lately… but when a wedding gives you this many incredible images, narrowing them down starts to feel almost offensive. 😂
