There is a moment that happens at multicultural weddings that I do not think we talk about enough. Everyone is beautifully dressed. The ceremony space is stunning. The music begins. Family members start moving forward, offering blessings, circling, praying, participating, and quietly following rituals that carry deep meaning. And somewhere in the front row, one side of the family is sitting there with love in their hearts, curiosity on their faces, and absolutely no idea what is happening. They are not being rude. They are not uninterested. They are not disconnected because they do not care. They are lost because no one explained it to them. In this episode of South Asian Wedded Life, I’m talking about why cultural interpretation matters so deeply in multicultural, Indian-American, South Asian, Hindu, fusion, and interfaith weddings. This is not just about translation. Translation tells people what was said. Interpretation helps people understand what it means. And that difference can completely change the way a family experiences a wedding. I share a personal story from when my brother-in-law got married in Visakhapatnam, India, and my father-in-law quietly arranged for a student to stay with me and help explain what was happening throughout the wedding. I did not know ahead of time that he had done this. But when I realized it, it became one of the first times I truly felt his love in a way words could never have expressed. He saw my possible discomfort before I even had to name it. He understood that I would be in a room, a language, a culture, and a ceremony where everyone else seemed to belong naturally, and I might need help belonging with dignity. That is love. That is hospitality. That is family. And that is what many multicultural weddings are missing. Because when people understand the “why,” their hearts open differently. They stop watching from the outside. They become part of the story. Why do Indian weddings have so many events? For many guests attending their first South Asian wedding, the experience can feel surprising. Instead of a single ceremony and reception, Indian weddings often unfold across several celebrations — including Mehndi, Haldi, Sangeet, the wedding ceremony, and a reception. But these events are not simply parties. Each one has cultural meaning and plays an important role in preparing the couple, their families, and their community for marriage. There is someone who greets the guests at almost every Hindu wedding we photograph before they ever see the bride or groom.



Lord Ganesha. ❤️



Today is Ganesh Chaturthi, and after more than two decades of photographing Indian and fusion weddings, Ganesha has become one of those details we instinctively look for.



Sometimes he’s grand and surrounded by flowers. Sometimes he’s a small murti quietly placed near the ceremony entrance. But his presence means something: new beginnings, wisdom, prosperity and the removal of obstacles.



And what bigger new beginning is there than marriage?



For our Indian-American and fusion families, we also think there’s something important in this: traditions don’t have to remain frozen in time to remain meaningful.



Celebrate them. Explain them to your children. Let grandparents tell the stories. Blend traditions from both sides. Add the birthday cake if you want to! There is no cultural purity test your family needs to pass.



Tradition survives because we continue carrying it forward—even when the next generation carries it a little differently.



And a Regeti family fun fact? Ganesh isn’t our only birthday today. Our son Brijesh turns 24 while spending his birthday in Peru in the Peace Corps! ❤️



He also has medical school applications out there in the universe, so given Ganesha’s reputation for removing obstacles… we’re just saying, a little birthday favor would be perfectly timed. 😉🙏🏽

This is my favorite kind of chaos to photograph — the in-between moments right before the doors open, when a wedding party of tiny humans (and their very patient grownups) are doing everything they can to hold it together for just a few more minutes. Been shooting these hallway holding patterns for almost 20 years and they never get old.
