Micro wedding? What is that? 2020 Has Created a Different 2021!

2020 has made the industry well aware in 2021 of exactly what a microwedding is by now. Having shot at least 10 now ourselves we thought that it would be helpful to talk about microweddings and give some insight on what we see based on our experience in the wedding industry for the last two decades.

But first let me introduce the beautiful Bride and Groom with whom we will be using their images to speak on behalf of this current trend. AnnMarie and Jason, one of our last client’s of 2020 to tie the knot, did so bravely, just the day after the United States Presidential Election day, I believe. When I first recieved the call/inbox from Kaitlyn Hostetler with EVOKE regarding covering AnnMarie and Jason’s wedding I was in no way surprised at all (*side note, I attended high school along side both of them and AnnMarie had been following us for a while on instagram @theregetis keeping in touch over the last year). Many of you may remember Michelle and Michael’s wedding that we last covered with the talented EVOKEDC team, quite the fans of all things detailed – so we cannot wait to show you their spin on this absolutely beautiful microwedding in Washington DC at the Line Hotel.

In my opinion these were two kids in high school that if I could have crowned homecoming king and queen just to put them together, I would have. AnnMarie was always very prim and proper, well put together, nails always perfect and to accompany that perfection the dream student for any teacher. She was typically quiet, reserved, non-confrontationally and got along with practically everybody, I think it is safe to say we all loved and adored her. Jason on the other hand was a bit preppy for most, loved baseball, always had a hat on his head, he was the cute blonde haired, blue eyed, tall slender, lean handsome boy that could have stepped out of the High School Musical, so light hearted, jovial and charistmatic that if he said hello to you – one would of simply been surprised he might even know your name – when all along he was the most down to earth, fun loving guy who hung with a lot of the upperclassmen.

To see these two married melted me to my core, I could not imagine a couple that I have wanted so much to see have a love like this ever before. They took all that goodness from highschool, combined with all the lessons they have learned in life, creating this amazing and beautifully blended family unit. The most humble of people embracing it all, the good with the bad, the happy with the sad – having seen you all make it through 2020, the rest of life ain’t got nothing on you two!

This is why a microwedding was the perfect way for the two of them to have been able to embrace their wedding day.

At the start of this pandemic we were busy handling many a change request regarding dates as people jumped ship on committed wedding dates and tried the best they could to find dates that not only worked to save most if not all of their prized wedding vendors but that also might push them through if not past the fear of the pandemic to include federal and state mandates.

It was these very mandates that we feel forced our couples to trim down their guesst lists and rethink their wedding approach altogether as a whole from a planning perspective. For many of our weddings the planners have been the unsung hero’s in it all – behind the scenes many think that the industry simply shut down, but far from it. We all pulled together, brainstormed options moving forward, talked about comfort zones, listened to one another’s struggles and for our clients submerged ourselves in the massive amount of emails/logistics, opening our hearts and minds taking flexibility to a new level allowing contractual changes that permitted clients to split their one wedding day into multiple days and even weekends amongst 2020 and 2021. Given the unknowns most client’s simply wanted to be married and felt the celebration of that would be best embraced in 2021, some completly jumped ship on 2020 and others said the show must go on. Thus sprang the microwedding concept of reeling it all back in for a moment and being presented with the options based on the venue restrictions, state and federal restrictions, ability and comfort with traveling, while remembering that everyone’s comfort level with COVID varies greatly and should be respected. It allowed the world a moment to breathe and rethink what truly matters most in the thick of it all. Our families. It turned these original largely scaled events into these smaller, intimate, one of a kind celebrational experiences. Coverage hours due to less prep time or the omission of dancing were reduced by one or two, allowing the focus to become more about the concept of “Me & You”. Our clients have creatively come up with using wider long tables with simple details, florals fresh and full of life, individually noted seat cards already placed at their table voiding the concept of the typical seating chart display most of us have grown use to and see many hovering around. Client’s are reinvesting thier funds on immersing their clients in the experience of this intimate setting, upgrading the floral spreads, seating, tableware, linens, lighting, providing shaws for warmth while sitting at the dinner table, expanding the menu experience and embracing their loved ones speeches just a little more than they use to.

As a third party looking it, it’s humbling. 2020 was a challenging year for us all. But from the ashes a Pheanix is born, new life is all around us. If we just take a moment to stop and look around we will find it. 2020 left us a little more reminded and I think that microweddings are earning themselves a new place in our market – respected and embraced by all. In our professional experience it has created a “reset” if you will to allow clients the option to scale it back without the fear that loved one’s will have hurt feelings or that they have to fullfil the obligatory portrait list any longer. We are excited for 2021 and what the future brings having seen so many things. We are hopeful that this solidifies the need for event planners even more.

We cannot express our own true love, respect and admiration for all of you as you rose to the challenge presented before you. We are looking forward to standing side by side with each one of you as we move into a new era of the event industry embracing the beautiful new world of weddings that have sprung!

That candid laugh right before the kiss lands? That's the real stuff. Alekhya couldn't hold back her smile at her reception at Westfields Marriott, and honestly moments like this are why we love hovering nearby with our cameras instead of just posing people stiffly and walking away. The pink lehenga against all that greenery was a whole mood too.

Receptions have this different energy than the ceremony — looser, happier, more "we actually did it" vibes. We caught so many good ones that night, including an epic Jaggo at the end. Want us capturing moments like this at your reception? Drop a comment or DM us to chat!
That wave. That smile that's holding back about ten different emotions at once. This is vidai - the moment a bride leaves her parents' home as a daughter and drives off into her new life - and honestly, it's one of the hardest moments to photograph because it's never just one feeling. It's joy and grief and excitement all tangled up in a single hand gesture through a car window.

What gets me every time is how brides find the strength to smile like this, mehndi-covered hand up, even when their world just shifted. Twenty years of shooting these and that wave never stops being powerful.

If you want a team that knows how to catch these in-between moments - not just the posed ones - let's talk. Link in bio to book a consult.
There's a specific kind of quiet that happens right before a vidai. You can see it starting here — Alekhya's eyes are down, her mom is close enough to touch, and Amar is already holding her hand like he knows what's coming. This is the walk most South Asian brides make once in her life, from the house she grew up in to the one she's about to start building. A good amount of our South Asian Indian America brides do tend to skip it too.

We've photographed hundreds of these and it never gets easier to watch, honestly. The guests behind them pause too — everyone knows this moment deserves silence.

If your wedding has a vidai (or any tradition where the emotion hits harder than you expect), we want to be there for it. Drop a comment or send us a DM to talk about your day.
That hug right before Alekhya walks out the door. This is Vidai — the moment a bride leaves her parents' home as a daughter and steps into her new life. I've photographed hundreds of these and they never get easier to watch. Look at her uncle's face in the background, trying so hard to hold it together. That's the whole wedding in one frame, honestly.

If you're planning a celebration with moments like this one, I'd love to be the one documenting them for you. Drop a comment or DM us to chat about your date.
That look she's giving him right there? That's not a 'pose for the camera' look. That's a 'I can't believe this is actually happening' look. We caught it walking down a path at the Sikh Foundation of Virginia, surrounded by trees, before all the ceremony chaos even started.

The details here are everything — his red turban matching her dupatta, that maroon stole with the tassels swinging as they walked, her nath catching the light. This is the kind of in-between moment we live for, the one nobody choreographs. That half-second before the twirl settles — Alekhya's lehenga still mid-spin, and Amar just... watching her. Not posing, not performing for the camera. Just watching his new wife catch the evening light in red and gold.

This is why we always build in time for portraits. The ceremony is beautiful, but moments like this — quiet, unscripted, a little giddy.

There's a reason we always try to get this angle during an Anand Karaj — shooting from behind the Guru Granth Sahib, with the granthi in the frame, so you see exactly what the couple sees: the entire sangat, seated together, witnessing. Alekhya and Amar are mid-Laav here, the moment where the groom leads and the bride follows around the Guru Granth Sahib, four times, each round a vow. You can feel the room's attention even in a still photo.

This is why we love photographing Sikh weddings — the symbolism is so visual and so intentional. Thinking about a Sikh ceremony for your own wedding? Send us a DM, we'd love to talk through how we'd cover it.
Everyone faces forward during an Anand Karaj — toward the Guru Granth Sahib, toward the moment being witnessed — so some of the most beautiful details happen in the one direction no one else is looking. That embroidery on the back of Alekhya's lehenga? Most of the room never saw it like this. We did.

There's something about photographing from behind the couple during a Sikh ceremony — you catch the whole sangat, the colors, the stillness of people sitting shoulder to shoulder in prayer. It's a different kind of portrait. Quieter. Bigger than just the two of them.

This is the moment everyone's eyes skip right past because they're waiting for the big kiss or the garland exchange, won't be happening here folks!— but this is still the good stuff. The palla draped and placed in the bride's hand, her chuda bangles catching the light. It's such a small gesture, but it's literally the moment she takes hold of the journey they're starting together.

At Sikh ceremonies we always tell couples: don't rush the hands. The jewelry, the fabric, the grip — it all tells a story the wide shot can't. Alekhya and Amar's ceremony at the Sikh Foundation of Virginia was full of these in-between moments, and I'm so glad we caught this one.

Given that Alekhya's father is no longer with us, her mother instead gently places the other end of the Palla, into the cupped hands of the bride. Alekhya, eyes down, soaking in the quiet before everything became official, while her new father-in-law watched the whole thing unfold with the kind of smile you can't fake.

This is what we love about shooting Sikh ceremonies — the formality of the moment never erases the small, human gestures happening right alongside it. We're always watching for these in-between beats because years from now, this is the photo that gets pointed at first.

There's a moment right before the words come out — eyes closed, hand lifted, like he's reaching for the note before it exists yet. This ragi was leading shabad kirtan at Alekhya and Amar's Sikh wedding ceremony, and I love how you can see the tabla player's hand already waiting, perfectly in sync, like they've done this a thousand times together (they probably have).

This is the part of a wedding day people don't always think to document — not the couple, not the decor, but the musicians who carry the entire spiritual weight of the ceremony on their voices. You can see decades of practice in that harmonium, worn smooth at the keys. That's not something you stage. That's something you notice.

That look. Right in the middle of the ceremony, surrounded by family, and Amar still can't help but grin at Alekhya like no one else is in the room. We caught this at the Sikh Foundation of Virginia, and moments like this are exactly why we never put the cameras down during the ceremony — the real stuff happens in the glances, not just the rituals.

Sikh wedding ceremonies have such a beautiful rhythm to them, the quiet focus, the hymns, and then these little bursts of pure joy between the couple. We live for catching both.

This is the kind of moment you have to be watching for — not posed, not repeated. Amar kneeling before the Guru Granth Sahib, kirpan in hand, the whole room holding its breath for a second. The maroon turban against that cream sherwani, the flowers banking the altar like they're standing guard too.

These quiet, reverent seconds inside a Sikh ceremony are some of my favorite to photograph — there's so much weight and history in them that you can't fake. Planning a Sikh wedding and want someone who knows how to catch these moments without getting in the way? Send us a DM, we'd love to talk.
The room is empty, the guests haven't arrived yet, and these little gold baskets are already doing their job, hold the Karah Parshad which is handed out to attendees - it is much more than just a dessert; it embodies the core principles of Sikhism. This is the kind of detail I find myself photographing before anyone else even walks in — because the care put into a Sikh wedding goes so far beyond the ceremony itself. At the Sikh Foundation of Virginia, hospitality isn't an afterthought, it's woven into everything, right down to how the napkins are set out.

These are the moments that remind me why I show up early to every wedding. Want us there for yours from the very first detail? Send us a DM or book a consult — link in bio.
Before the shabad even starts, there's this moment of quiet — flowers arranged just so, everyone finding their seats, the whole room settling into what's about to happen. These blush roses were part of Alekhya and Amar's day at the Sikh Foundation of Virginia, and I always make a point to slow down and capture the details like this before the ceremony energy picks up. They matter just as much as the big moments.

Some of my favorite frames from a wedding day aren't the big moments — they're the quiet textures in between. This soft white fringe falling across hand-embroidered paisley fabric, caught during Alekhya and Amar's Sikh ceremony, is the kind of detail most people don't really give a second thought too, Chaur Sahib, the ceremonial whisk. But it tells its own story: generations of craftsmanship, layers of tradition, and their Rumala Sahib, one of the little things that make their wedding day feel truly theirs.

I always tell couples — look up. The ceiling details at ceremonies like this one are never an afterthought, and this cluster of gold and pearl tassels hanging from the canopy at Alekhya and Amar's Sikh wedding was one of those small moments I couldn't walk past without photographing. Every strand catching the light a little differently, swaying so slightly you'd miss it if you weren't paying attention.

This is the kind of detail that gets lost in the rush of a wedding day but means everything when you look back years later and remember exactly where you were standing. Got a ceremony space full of details like this? Tell me about it in the comments, or DM me to chat about your date.
