Anu + Anthony = Perfection!

Starting with the alphabet it only makes sense that we begin our blog this year with Anu and Anthony’s wedding post! Now that they are really back and nestled in from their AMAZING honeymoon in the Maldive’s I am sure that they can appreciate their blog post officially being up and on the blog.

Anu is certainly a 2010 Bride that won my heart for more reasons than one. She not only fully trusted in us to provide her with the work she hired us to do but she never hesitated to take advice once she asked for it. Her ability to stay in touch and on top of all her team throughout her wedding planning process was simply admirable because she was so determined that her and Anthony have the wedding of their dreams that no one would forget. She certainly succeeded in 3 days of wonderful festivities!

We sincerely hope that Anthony and Anu will keep in touch with us as they continue on in life experiencing it to the fullest. We promise to keep in touch watching them grow through FB for sure!

Wow!!! The wedding was out of this world! Traditional essence mixed with modern class & now a breathtaking gateway to all the cherished memories through beautiful pictures & a fabulous website!!! Our niece Shelby is getting married this October, and being her Matron of Honor has given me another title I don’t get to carry very often on a wedding journey — Aunt Amy.

And this day filled my heart.

My Mom. My sister. My cousin Ellen. Shelby’s dear friend Maria, who at this point might as well share our DNA. 😂 My daughter Brittney, Alaissa, my cousin Kim and so many of the women who have been part of Shelby’s life coming together in our home to celebrate her.

Ellen and Maria especially — I truly could not have done this without you two.

Maybe it’s because we spend our lives photographing families, but days like this remind us why we’ve always cared so much about the people surrounding the pretty.

Decorations eventually come down.

Flowers fade.

The food disappears.

But someday these photographs become evidence of something much bigger:

Look who was there.

Look who loved you.

Look at the generations gathered in one place.

Look at the people who showed up for this chapter of your life.

We say all the time that photographs become more valuable as the years pass, and it’s a little different when suddenly they’re photographs of your own family.

Shelby, you are so incredibly loved.

And come October, I get to stand beside you while you become a wife.

But for one afternoon, we got to simply surround you with all the women who helped you become you.

That was the beautiful part. 🤍

This part of the ceremony is exactly why photographing an Indian wedding well requires more than simply knowing where to stand.

You have to understand what is unfolding around you.

The gestures that happen quickly. The family members who step in at exactly the right moment. The exchanges that may look ordinary to someone unfamiliar with the ceremony, but carry meaning because of who is doing them and what they represent.

Shatakshi and Madhu’s wedding brought together her Bihari heritage and his Telugu heritage, and throughout the ceremony you could see those traditions meeting and becoming something uniquely theirs.

And visually? Come on.

The red. The florals. The movement of her dupatta. The expressions between them when the ceremony gave them a second to actually look at one another.

Indian weddings are wonderfully layered like that.

There is the ritual happening in front of you, the emotion underneath it, and usually a dozen little stories unfolding around the edges at the exact same time.

Our job is to understand enough to anticipate the ritual — and stay observant enough to catch everything that was never rehearsed.

Because years from now, we want these photographs to do more than remind Shatakshi and Madhu how beautiful everything looked.

We want them to remember how it felt, who was beside them, what their families carried into that space, and the fleeting moments that made this ceremony unmistakably theirs.

Pretty photographs are wonderful.

But photographs that preserve the story?

Those are the ones we’re always chasing. 🤍

So yes — it is officially a Shatakshi Monday.

And before we even get back to these two, we have to give her brother some props again.

From walking her down the aisle toward Madhu, to literally fanning both of them through what felt like almost the entire ceremony — with only a few handoff breaks in between — on one of the hottest days of the summer, in full sun, wearing a full sherwani.

That is love.

But back to our beautiful couple, because seriously… how gorgeous are these two?

Shatakshi is Bihari. Madhu is Telugu.

And while some people may not immediately think of that as a “fusion wedding,” it absolutely is in its own way.

India is not one culture, one set of traditions, one language or one way of doing things. The beauty of Indian weddings is often found in those regional differences — in the customs each family brings with them, in what gets preserved, what gets adapted, and what gets blended when two people from different backgrounds choose to build one life together.

That is what makes weddings like this so beautiful to photograph.

You are not just documenting a ceremony.

You are watching two families bring pieces of where they come from into one shared space.

And Shatakshi and Madhu did that beautifully. 🤍

This is Madhu, right before the baraat became loud and joyful and completely uninhibited. 😂 Quiet, focused, a few minutes of stillness before the music takes over and everyone starts moving.

Some couples remind us that love, in its rawest and most uncomplicated form, absolutely still exists. Kavya + Kyle were that couple. 🤍

From the moment Naj reached out, this may genuinely have been one of the easiest bookings in the history of The Regeti’s.

Naj and Tanya of The Event Group International knew their clients. They understood their personalities, their style, what mattered to them, and what they wanted their photography + cinema experience to feel like. They presented Kavya with the options they believed would serve her best—and somehow knew that we were the match.

Great events don’t happen because one vendor performs exceptionally well in isolation. They happen when a team communicates, respects one another, anticipates needs and understands that we’re all there for the same reason: to give two families the best experience we possibly can.

And then there was Alexis at Stonewall. Anyone who photographs weddings at golf clubs knows that getting a couple onto the course for portraits can sometimes be its own little adventure. We aren’t asking for an afternoon—we usually need five or ten good minutes, beautiful light and a little cooperation.

Alexis didn’t hesitate. She helped get us onto a cart, got Kavya + Kyle where we needed them and made it possible for us to create those bridge portraits without turning it into a production.And her timing could not have been better.

We finished, headed back inside and almost immediately afterward—the heavens OPENED. Rain.

The kind that makes you look outside and realize you just got very, very lucky.

They’re about a venue professional who understood that helping the photographers get ten minutes can mean giving a couple photographs they’ll have for the next fifty years.

You may know WHAT they’re doing. But do you know why her footprints are red?

Let’s break down Kanku Pagla.

If you’ve been to a Gujarati wedding, you’ve probably seen some version of this: the bride’s feet covered in kanku — the red vermilion associated with auspiciousness — and the footprints she leaves behind.

Sometimes on cloth, sometimes on paper, sometimes carefully preserved. Depending on family, community and generation, when and how it’s done can look completely different.

But the tradition underneath all those variations is what fascinates us. Kanku Pagla literally means those red, auspicious footprints. And the symbolism reaches much further back than the keepsake we see today. In Hindu tradition, Goddess Lakshmi — prosperity, abundance, good fortune — is represented by her footprints. And a new bride arriving at her marital home has long been associated with the arrival of Lakshmi herself. That’s why one of the most recognizable forms of Kanku Pagla occurs during Griha Pravesh: the bride steps into kanku, leaving her red footprints as she enters the home for the first time as a married woman.

Over generations, families carried and adapted that symbolism into their own traditions — including pre-wedding ceremonies like the one we’re photographing here.

And THAT is what we think matters.

South Asian traditions aren’t frozen in time. They travel. They change. They become regional, then familial. Grandmothers teach daughters, daughters teach granddaughters, families move across oceans…and sometimes the way something is done shifts while a piece of its original meaning quietly remains.

So the next time you see a bride’s feet painted red and paper sliding beneath them…don’t just see two little red footprints.

You’re watching a family carry forward an ancient idea of auspicious beginnings, prosperity, and the threshold between one chapter and the next.

Maybe that’s why we’re a little obsessive about photographing things like this.

Approximately 17 minutes before everyone starts asking where the bride and groom are. 😂

There is a very specific little window on a Hindu wedding day when you’re dressed, you’re ready, the mandap is waiting…

…and for approximately five glorious minutes, nobody needs anything from you.

No one is calling your name.

No auntie has come looking for you.

Nobody is asking where the garlands went.

The baraat hasn’t taken over the building.

And your photographers have very strategically made you disappear. 😏

This is that time.

A little walking.

A little snuggling.

An Eskimo kiss because apparently we are THAT cute today.

A gorgeous quiet silhouette.

And then…

a man on a bicycle casually cruises straight through your wedding portraits with a case of Michelob.

Because of course he did. 😂🍺🚲

And you know what?

WE KEPT THE PHOTO.

Because twenty years from now, we guarantee somebody is going to flip through these photographs and say:

“WAIT. Who is the guy with the beer?!”

And THAT is the good stuff.

We’ll give you the beautiful portraits.

We’ll find the light.

We’ll protect that little pocket of time before the beautiful madness of a Hindu wedding gets underway.

But we’re also never going to be so busy creating perfect wedding photographs that we miss the wonderfully imperfect things happening right in front of us.

The nose bumps.

The laughing.

The ridiculous interruptions.

The random guy on a bicycle who unknowingly earned himself a permanent place in the wedding gallery. 😂

Because once a Hindu wedding gets moving…

IT. GETS. MOVING.

And before hundreds of people want a hug, a blessing, a photograph, a conversation or simply need to know where you are…

we want you to have a few minutes where you get to just be you two.

We are suckers for great parent shots! There`s a different kind of magic in small weddings — the room feels closer, quieter, more real. Isha and Kevin`s ceremony was intimate but packed with so much love, and honestly, our favorite part wasn`t even the ceremony itself.

It was the getting ready and right before the ceremony having relaxed time to capture the little things and the priceless ones that took place in-between like this one, with Dad!

No rigid timeline, no one checking a watch. Just Isha`s mom adjusting her bangles, fixing her blouse, steadying her hands. Isha and Ryan helping each other prepare and stepping outside with family before the start of their ceremony.

These are the moments where families actually come together — not posed, not rushed, just present.

They’re not just sticking a colorful piece of wood into the ground. And this may be one of my favorite examples of how much meaning can hide inside a Gujarati wedding.

If you’ve grown up around Gujarati weddings, you may have seen some version of this ritual your entire life.

The decorated post is associated with the Manek Stambh and Mandap Ropan / Mandap Muhurat — the ceremonial establishing of the mandap before the wedding.

Before it is placed into the earth, the post may be wrapped with sacred thread and blessed as part of the family’s ritual. Then it is carried outside and planted into the ground.

But here’s the part I love:

Before we build the place where two people will be married, we acknowledge the earth upon which it will stand.

The Manek Stambh becomes more than a little wooden post. It represents the establishment of the mandap — the sacred space beneath which a new marriage will begin.

And depending upon the family, region and Gujarati community, the customs surrounding it may look a little different. That’s something I’ve learned after more than two decades of photographing South Asian families: there is rarely just one Indian way of doing anything.

Sometimes even the bride or groom knows what their family does because they’ve watched their parents, grandparents, aunties and uncles do it their entire lives…

…but they’ve never actually been told why.

That’s the part that gets me.

Because one day, someone is going to look at photographs like this and ask:

“What were they doing here?”

And I don’t want the answer to simply be, “Oh, that was something we did before the wedding.”

I want someone to remember.

The name.

The reason.

Who held it.

Who tied the thread.

Who taught them how to do it.

Because somewhere between tradition being practiced and tradition being explained is where legacy either gets passed down—or quietly disappears.

And THAT is why we photograph the little things. 🤍

Madhu is ready to get this baraat started - nothing like a morning baraat to really get you moving! There`s something so joyful about a daytime baraat - the sun`s out, the dhol is going, and the groom is dancing his way to the mandap surrounded by the people who`ve known him his whole life. That arms-wide, head-back energy? For some it might be McDonald`s but for us --- t`s why we wakeup early in the morning on the weekends.
