Somewhere along the way, the traditional bridal portraits have started disappearing.

Wedding photography became more candid, editorial and movement-driven—and we love all of that. But the portrait should never become collateral damage to a trend.

Long before photography, families commissioned painted portraits to preserve a person for generations. Photography changed who had access to that privilege, but not its purpose.

These are legacy photographs.

That’s why we believe every bride AND groom deserves dedicated portrait time on the wedding timeline—in addition to editorial images, candids, couples portraits and family formals.

There’s another reason we protect this time.

For a bride, everything is finally on. Hair. Makeup. Jewelry. The outfit chosen months ago. And before the doors open, the baraat begins and the beautiful chaos takes over, she gets a few minutes to slow down.

To breathe.

To take it in.

To simply be the bride.

Then we make the portrait.

Because 50 years from now, someone may hold this photograph and say:

Wedding rings are one of them.

For many of our Indian-American and fusion couples, the rings are actually part of the blending of traditions that makes their wedding uniquely theirs.

The wedding ring as we commonly recognize it in America is deeply rooted in Western wedding tradition. The circle has represented continuity and eternity for centuries, and the exchange of rings eventually became one of the most recognizable symbols of marriage in Western culture.

And we love watching our couples fold that tradition right alongside everything else.

A mangalsutra.

Sindoor.

Thali.

Toe rings.

Sacred threads.

Garlands.

And these rings.

Different traditions. Different histories. All carrying meaning into the same marriage.

Which is also why we believe the rings deserve more than simply being placed into the obligatory overhead photograph with the invitation, shoes, perfume and jewelry.

Yes, we photograph that too.

But we also want this.

A photograph where the rings themselves become the subject.

Because years from now, these little pieces of metal will have lived an entire life with you. They’ll acquire scratches. Maybe a stone will be reset. A band may eventually be resized. They’ll travel, wash dishes, hold babies, build careers, weather difficult seasons and hopefully still be sitting on those same hands decades from now.

That makes this photograph considerably more sentimental than it may appear today.

Wedding photography isn’t just about proving everything was there.

Sometimes it’s about recognizing what deserves to be remembered on its own.

And these absolutely do.

There is someone who greets the guests at almost every Hindu wedding we photograph before they ever see the bride or groom.

Lord Ganesha. ❤️

Today is Ganesh Chaturthi, and after more than two decades of photographing Indian and fusion weddings, Ganesha has become one of those details we instinctively look for.

Sometimes he’s grand and surrounded by flowers. Sometimes he’s a small murti quietly placed near the ceremony entrance. But his presence means something: new beginnings, wisdom, prosperity and the removal of obstacles.

And what bigger new beginning is there than marriage?

For our Indian-American and fusion families, we also think there’s something important in this: traditions don’t have to remain frozen in time to remain meaningful.

Celebrate them. Explain them to your children. Let grandparents tell the stories. Blend traditions from both sides. Add the birthday cake if you want to! There is no cultural purity test your family needs to pass.

Tradition survives because we continue carrying it forward—even when the next generation carries it a little differently.

And a Regeti family fun fact? Ganesh isn’t our only birthday today. Our son Brijesh turns 24 while spending his birthday in Peru in the Peace Corps! ❤️

He also has medical school applications out there in the universe, so given Ganesha’s reputation for removing obstacles… we’re just saying, a little birthday favor would be perfectly timed. 😉🙏🏽

And a Regeti family fun fact? Ganesh isn’t our only birthday today. Our son Brijesh turns 24 while spending his birthday in Peru in the Peace Corps! ❤️

He also has medical school applications out there in the universe, so given Ganesha’s reputation for removing obstacles… we’re just saying, a little birthday favor would be perfectly timed. 😉🙏🏽

This is the part no one plans for. Tara had already arrived, the doors were about to open, and there was no time for a formal bridal party photo — so instead of forcing one, we worked with what we had. "Tara, look back, drop your bouquet" — and just like that, the girls came running to gather her train, laughing, adjusting, completely in the moment. Thirty seconds before walking down the aisle, and it turned into one of my favorite images from her whole day.

That look on their faces?! The anticipation is REAL as everyone waits on Tara to make her entrance. 😄 You can practically feel the countdown happening in this hallway — flower girls fussing with their dresses, the littlest ring bearer clutching his sippy cup like it`s his most important job of the day, and one very serious best man giving us his best "are we doing this or what" face.

This is my favorite kind of chaos to photograph — the in-between moments right before the doors open, when a wedding party of tiny humans (and their very patient grownups) are doing everything they can to hold it together for just a few more minutes. Been shooting these hallway holding patterns for almost 20 years and they never get old.
