5 Things Every South Asian Bride Should Know BeforeHiring Any Vendors

By Amy & Srinu Regeti — The Regeti’s | South Asian Wedded Life (SAWL)

A clarity guide for the Indian & Fusion bride who deserves confidence, calm, and fewer surprises.

If you’re planning a South Asian or Indian-American wedding, you already know this journey comes with more layers than anyone outside our community realizes. The traditions, the timelines, the families, the expectations — nothing about this experience is “standard,” even though most of the wedding industry still tries to treat it that way.

Today’s post is here to change that.

This is the carousel we shared on Instagram, but expanded — with the deeper insight brides have been asking for.
Consider this your pre-planning cheat sheet… the clarity every South Asian or fusion bride deserves before she books a single vendor.

Let’s begin.

1. Booking Order Matters More Than You Think

Western weddings have a “pick what you love” approach.
South Asian weddings? They run on sequence, not preference.

If you book out of order, things start collapsing fast — dates, rituals, setup times, photography coverage, priest availability… all of it.

This is the correct booking order for most Indian + fusion weddings:

  1. Priest / Pandit / Officiant
  2. Planner vs. No Planner
  3. Venue
  4. Photography + Cinematography
  5. Hair & Makeup
  6. Planner / Coordinator
  7. Decor, DJ, Catering, etc.

Following this order protects your entire weekend from unnecessary chaos.

2. Your Wedding Day Starts WAY Earlier Than It Says on Paper

If your ceremony is at 10 AM, your day doesn’t start at 9.

It often starts before sunrise.

This impacts everything:

  • Hair and makeup schedules
  • When family members need to be ready
  • When photography coverage begins
  • Whether your décor team can complete the mandap in time
  • How much rest you actually get

Understanding this early helps you build a realistic, peaceful, and well-supported timeline.

3. Clarity With Family Comes First

Before you talk to any vendor, align with your families about:

  • What traditions matter most
  • How many events will take place
  • Who is involved in planning
  • Who is contributing
  • What level of involvement each side expects
  • What compromises are non-negotiable

Without this clarity, vendor consults feel confusing — because you’re trying to plan without an agreed-upon foundation.

4. South Asian Wedding Budgets Are Layered

You’re not planning one event.
You’re planning multiple celebrations, often across multiple days.

What most brides underestimate:

  • Setup/reset fees for mandaps and décor
  • Multi-day photography + cinematography
  • Catering minimums for large guest counts
  • Additional clothing, jewelry, and accessories
  • “Small” add-ons that stack quickly
  • Extra transportation needs
  • Parent-driven guest list expansions

Our weddings operate on different math — and understanding that early keeps surprises to a minimum.

5. You Need Vendors Who Truly Understand South Asian Weddings

This is the difference between a smooth weekend and a stressful one.

A vendor saying:

  • “We’ve done one before.”
  • “We love cultural weddings.”
  • “We can learn!”

…is not the same as a vendor who actually understands:

  • The differences between Telugu, Punjabi, Gujarati, Maharashtrian, Bengali, and Tamil weddings
  • Mandap lighting needs
  • Haldi + yellow staining
  • Baraat logistics
  • Vidaii emotion + timing
  • Multi-day fatigue
  • Fire restrictions
  • How South Asian family photos work
  • The choreography of Sangeet nights

Your vendors don’t just need experience — they need fluency.

The #1 Mistake Brides Regret

Booking vendors before understanding their own rhythm, rituals, timeline, and family expectations.

A South Asian wedding isn’t something you “figure out later.”
It’s something you build intentionally from the start.

Here’s the quiet truth no one tells guests before an Indian or Indian-American wedding:

You’re not just watching.
You’re participating.
Not with choreography or rituals — but with presence.

Indian weddings move differently.
They breathe differently.
They carry meaning in moments that don’t announce themselves.

When guests arrive expecting efficiency, cues, or constant explanation, tension builds — and the couple feels it.

What actually matters?
Respect.
Patience.
Openness.
That’s it.

This post isn’t about rules or etiquette.
It’s about showing up with curiosity instead of expectations — and why that one shift changes everything for the couple at the center of it all.

There’s what you see on wedding day.
And then there’s everything that makes us the photographers we are.

This channel is where we share the in-between —
the building, the learning, the late nights,
the marriage that has carried us through nearly two decades of photographing other people’s love stories.

We’re still very much in weddings.
Still shooting.
Still telling stories.
Still showing up for our couples.
But here, you’ll also see how we live, work, problem-solve, and grow together behind the camera —
because who we are off a wedding day shapes how we show up on one.

If you’re planning a wedding,
work in the wedding industry,
or simply love honest conversations about partnership, creativity, and building a life together —
you’ll fit right in.

Yesterday I shared Birju’s baraat as a reel — the color, the music, the movement.
But today, I’m sharing the meaning behind it.

There’s so much more to that moment than drums and dancing… and I felt called to write about it — about family, lineage, belonging, and what Indian-American communities represent in this country far beyond what meets the eye.

If you’ve ever looked at a baraat and wondered what you’re really witnessing — or if you believe America is at its best when we understand each other a little more — this one is worth reading.

Some Vidai's feel ceremonial…
and then there are Vidaiis like this.

Palak and her grandfather — a moment that says everything without a single word.
You could feel the attachment, the history, the love that only a grandparent carries.

Vidai isn’t just a goodbye.
It’s generations holding on… and letting go… all at once.

What makes a South Asian fusion wedding fusion?
Hint: It’s not just about skin tone or who’s marrying outside the culture.

Fusion happens when:
✨ Two Indian families speak different languages
✨ Two regional traditions meet under one mandap
✨ Two religions blend with respect
✨ Two American upbringings reinterpret cultural roots
✨ Two worlds — any worlds — choose love over labels

This is why we chose this niche.
Because fusion isn’t a buzzword.
It’s the lived experience of so many Indian-American couples navigating identity, culture, family, and love — all at once.

Today’s blog touches the real heart of fusion weddings, including:

✨ How wardrobe, rituals & food carry generational meaning
✨ Why family dynamics are the true fusion challenge
✨ What makes these weddings emotionally rich and unforgettable
If you’re planning a fusion or Indian-American wedding — or simply love seeing two worlds become one — this one is for you.
