By Amy Regeti (aka Aunt Mammie to ShelbyJ) — The Regeti’s | South Asian Wedded Life (SAWL)
There are moments in life that stop you in your tracks — that remind you just how far love, family, and time can carry you. Last night was one of those moments.
My niece, Shelby, and her fiancé, Thomas, hosted the most heart-warming, intentional engagement celebration at Vanish Brewery in Leesburg, Virginia — surrounded by their closest family and friends. The evening wasn’t just about a ring or a toast; it was a reminder of how love, when nurtured with care and intention, can grow into something deeply meaningful.

As an aunt who has watched Shelby grow from a bright-eyed little girl into a confident, grounded young woman, I could not be more proud. She has navigated a world that constantly tells young women who they should be — how to look, what to share, how to measure their worth — and yet, she’s managed to remain wholly, unapologetically herself. She is grace and grit in equal measure, and somehow she continues to bloom exactly as she was meant to, without bending to fit anyone else’s mold.

An Engagement Party with Meaning
In a time where engagement parties have become rare, or at times just another excuse to gather, Shelby and Thomas brought back its true purpose — to honor the start of something sacred, with the people who matter most.
The highlight of the evening was when they surprised everyone with the most thoughtful bridal party reveals. Each person received an adorable white Kobalt toolbox (a perfect nod to Thomas’ love of mechanics) with a personalized note inside — a handwritten letter from Shelby explaining why that person was chosen to stand beside her.

It wasn’t just cute; it was intentional. Every detail, every word written inside those boxes spoke of gratitude, friendship, and the kind of loyalty that outlasts trends and time.
A Box I’ll Never Forget
And then… it was my turn.
I wasn’t expecting anything. I was there simply as “Aunt Amy,” heart full, soaking in the joy of it all. But when Shelby walked toward me — eyes glistening, that same soft smile I’ve known since she was little — and handed me a box of my own, I froze.
Inside was my letter. Her words. A simple ask that will forever be one of the greatest honors of my life:
She asked me to be her Matron of Honor.
I’ll be honest — I ugly-cried. Not the cute kind, either. The kind where your mascara doesn’t stand a chance and your heart bursts wide open. It was unexpected, undeserved in my eyes, and yet one of the most touching moments I’ve ever experienced.

To my sister — you raised a remarkable young woman, though if anyone had seen that level of intentionality and detail, they might’ve sworn she was mine 😉.
The Weightless Journey Begins
Now begins the weightless journey — and I say we because my daughter, Brittney, who was also asked to be one of Shelby’s bridesmaids, will be walking that road right alongside me. She’s already been on her own successful journey for months now, and I couldn’t be prouder to have her as my partner in this next chapter.

With our shared love of Indian food, this is going to be a challenge for sure — but we’ll manage, together. Laughter, love, and a few healthy compromises are already on the menu.
And while last night was a celebration of what’s to come, it also reminded me why these traditions matter — why marking these milestones with loved ones is so powerful. Engagement parties used to be about more than champagne and selfies; they were about commitment witnessed — a family’s way of saying, “We’re here for you, through it all.”
That spirit was alive and well last night.

Aunt Amy’s Speech That Went Unsaid
I didn’t read my speech last night — partly because I was still in shock from being asked to stand by her side, and partly because sometimes silence feels more fitting when hearts are already full. But for what it’s worth, here’s what I would have said:

My Speech for Shelby & Thomas
“Shelby, you have been one of my life’s greatest joys to watch grow — from the little girl who played in the yard with her cousins, to the young woman standing here tonight, radiant and ready for this next chapter.
You’ve always had this way about you — a quiet strength, a deep kindness, and a heart that loves without condition. Watching you find someone who sees you, cherishes you, and walks beside you the way Thomas does… that’s the dream every parent, every aunt, every loved one hopes for.
Marriage isn’t about perfection; it’s about partnership. It’s not about the fairytale — it’s about the foundation. And tonight, as you take this step surrounded by the people who love you most, I want you to know that what you’re building is already beautiful.
Thomas, thank you for loving her the way you do — for honoring her independence, her laughter, and her family. I hope you both always remember that your marriage will be the longest conversation of your life — so fill it with honesty, patience, and grace.
And when you’re tested — by time, by circumstances, by life — let your loyalty to the values that brought you here guide you home every single time.
I love you both endlessly. Congratulations — and thank you for letting me be part of your forever.”
A Humbled & Honored “Yes”

As I stood there last night, watching Shelby and Thomas surrounded by the people who helped shape them, I couldn’t help but think: this is what family looks like when love is intentional.
To all our readers, clients, and friends who follow our journey — Srinu and I are beyond excited to finally share Shelby and Thomas’ beach engagement photos from this past summer. We’ve been holding onto them just for this moment, and there couldn’t be a more perfect time to show the world their joy, connection, and undeniable chemistry.
Shelby, thank you for letting us capture your love through our lens — and for letting me love you not just as your aunt, but now, as your Matron of Honor.
2026 is going to be an amazing and beautiful New Year for the entire family! Here’s to your forever — may it be as beautiful, grounded, and radiant as you are. 💙
