Ducklings, Drama, and One Unexpected Rescue: Life at the Regeti Homestead

Do you think wedding days are chaotic? Try rescuing a duckling from a mash-quicksand trap while being scolded by its mom. In your pajamas. With your mother-in-law shouting directions.

That was our Tuesday morning — and honestly, it was peak Regeti energy.

Over the past year, Srinu and I have been slowly turning our little slice of Virginia into a modern-day homestead. Between photographing multicultural weddings and raising five kids, we’ve added gardens, chickens, and yes — ducks. But not just any ducks…

These are boujie ducks. And their latest drama? Nothing short of reality TV.

Our Boujie Ducks and Their Custom-Crafted Palace

A year ago, we decided we needed ducks. Not for eggs. Not for meat. Just for the vibe.

So, of course, Srinu and I designed them a palace — complete with a metal corrugated roof, ventilation, shade, and a duck door that could honestly double as modern farmhouse decor. We didn’t cut corners. These ducks live better than most Airbnb listings.

Hence the name: The Boujie Ducks.

“Ducks Don’t Hatch Their Own Eggs…” — A Direct Quote from My Live-In MIL

Since the ducks started laying, my mother-in-law — who now lives with us — had one recurring line:

“Ducks don’t hatch their own eggs. You must put them under the chickens.”

She said it while pouring her chai. She said it while watching the ducks waddle around. Honestly, she could have had it printed on a bumper sticker.

So naturally, when one of our ducks went full broody and parked herself on a clutch of eggs, she gave us the side-eye. And we didn’t argue — we just watched and waited.

And Then — QUACKING MIRACLE — We Got Five Ducklings!

This weekend, our little duck proved the doubters wrong. One by one, FIVE ducklings hatched. They were perfect, wobbly, and fluffy enough to make you cry.

I didn’t say “I told you so” to my MIL… but let’s just say I smiled real big that day.

Our family was officially in duckling mode. The kids were obsessed. Srinu was impressed. And my mother-in-law? Still a little suspicious of the science.

The Quicksand Incident: One Duckling, a Bowl of Mash, and Full-Fledged Mayhem

This morning, peace ended abruptly when my MIL came charging into the kitchen like the house was on fire:

“One of the babies is stuck! In the bowl! Come now!”

Out we ran. Pajamas. Slippers. Still half-asleep.

Turns out, one brave duckling had ventured too deep into the soft mash feed bowl — which, in retrospect, is basically quicksand for a bird that weighs 3 ounces. His little webbed feet couldn’t move. He was chest-deep in duck oatmeal. Peeping like a tiny, alarmed foghorn.

While we were trying to gently extract him, Mama Duck lost her mind.

She shrieked.

She flapped.

She charged us like an angry feathery linebacker.

I screamed.

My MIL waved a towel like she was chasing off a bear.

Srinu looked on with the calm concern of a man watching his family fall apart in slow motion.

And the poor duckling? Covered in mash, eyes wide, trying to figure out how life went so wrong.

Towel-Wrapped, Blow-Dried, and Back With Mom

We finally wrangled the baby out of the bowl, towel-wrapped him like a burrito, and — yes — blow-dried him back to fluff status.

Mama Duck, of course, scolded us all the way through the process like we were irresponsible babysitters. She eventually let him back under her wing, where he tucked himself in with the others and pretended none of it ever happened.

This Is the Regeti Life. A Little Bit Wild. A Lot of Heart.

You might know us as Amy and Srinu — the wedding photographers. But behind the camera, we’re a family of storytellers, animal wranglers, chaos coordinators, and early-morning duckling rescuers.

Whether it’s fluffing your veil on your wedding day or fluffing a soggy duckling after a bowl mishap, we show up with the same love, laughter, and full attention.

We photograph weddings with purpose.

We build duck huts with blueprints.

We raise kids with grace (and caffeine).

And we do it all… together.

We’re still very much in weddings.
Still shooting.
Still telling stories.
Still showing up for our couples.
But here, you’ll also see how we live, work, problem-solve, and grow together behind the camera —
because who we are off a wedding day shapes how we show up on one.

Christmas in America is culture as much as it is tradition 🤍

It’s family, food, memories, and the people we carry with us — both near and far.

Today’s South Asian Wedded Life episode holds space for engagement, family dynamics, Indo-American life, and the emotions that surface when love and legacy meet.

Sending love to everyone navigating the season in their own way.

🎄 Merry Christmas, SAWL family.
Coming off a wedding weekend always leaves me thoughtful 🤍

Somewhere between unloading camera bags, folding laundry, and realizing Christmas is next week, I found myself replaying a quiet thought I know I’m not alone in…

We shouldn’t have to explain neglect to our kids or visiting family in a place meant to teach reverence.

I finally sat down and talked about it — honestly, gently, and without judgment — in a new episode of SAWL - Spilling the Chai with Amy ☕️

If you’ve ever left a place of worship feeling spiritually full but physically unsettled… this conversation might be for you.
